About the Institute

Establishment of Russian Academy of Sciences Institute for Informatics and Mathematical Modelling of Technological Processes of the Kola Science Center RAS

The Institute is a structural unit of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), located on the territory of Murmansk region. Kola Science Center, an establishment of Russian Academy of Sciences, is given delegated power to run the Institute. Methodic-Scientific control of the Institute is accomplished by the Department of Nanotechnologies and Information Technologies (DNIT RAS, earlier Department of Information Technologies and Computing Systems (DITCS RAS)).

The Institute was founded by decision № 103 of Presidium RAS USSR under date of January 31, 1989. The Institute was given the present name in accordance with decision № 274 of December 18, 2007.

The Institute is the only academic institution in the Far North of our country that carries out research works in the field of mathematical and computer modelling of complex nature-industrial and socio-economic systems as well as development of methods and tools for information support in regional management.

In accordance with the decision № 103 of RAS Presidium, USSR under date of January 31, 1989, the basic directions of the Institute’s activity are:

  • development of automated systems  managing territorial and industrial as well as mining complexes;
  • development of automated systems for complex scientific studies;
  • modeling of progressive non-waste technological processes in mining and chemical industries;
  • information support of natural resources studies (expert systems, data bases, packages of applied programs).

The directions of the Institute’s scientific studies are as follows:

a) State rubricator of scientific and technical information (SRSTI):

  • 20.23 Information search,
  • 28.17 Modelling theory,
  • 28.29 System analysis,
  • 50.30 Theory of automated management,
  • 50.49 Automated systems for administration.

b) Basic scientific directions of the Department of Nanotechnologies and Information Technologies (DNIT) RAS:

  • p.28. System analysis, artificial intelligence, systems of image recognition and decision taking under various criteria;
  • p.31. Development of global and integrated information and telecommunication systems and networks. Working out of Grid technologies and standards.

At present three fields of SRW are elaborated at the Institute:

  1. Methods and technologies providing information support of innovations life cycle. State registration № 0120.0 850592 (2007-2009), Scientific tutor: D.Sc. A.G. Oleynik, Laboratory of regional information systems.
  2. Information technologies managing the development of regional research and educational complex. State registration № 0120.0 850591 (2007-2009), Scientific tutor: D.Sc., Prof. V.A. Putilov, Laboratory of information technologies managing regional development.
  3. Models and methods of decisions’ coordination in management of a regional nature-industrial complex. State registration № (2008-2010), Scientific tutor: D.Sc., Prof. A.Ya. Fridman, Laboratory of information technologies managing nature-industrial systems.

Scientific school № ScSch-8249.2006.9 was established at the Institute whose status was officially confirmed by the grand from President’s program in 2007. Under the leadership of the director of the Institute D.Sc, Putilov V.A. scientific school members deal with studies in the field of “Design and Development of Information Technologies Supporting Regional Development Management” More than 40% of the Institute’s personnel involved in scientific studies are under the age of 35 years.

During the period of 2006-2007 one master’s thesis was defended by the staff of the Institute. In 2007 two master’s theses were presented to specialized committees.

Reference about the main results in collaboration between the Institute for Informatics and Mathematical Modelling KSC RAS and higher educational establishments in 2007 aimed at engaging talented young people into scientific studies within RAS system.
